 Rik van Hemmen will describe some of the epic naval battles of the War of 1812 between the US and British navies which are depicted in large and highly detailed paintings on display at the Twin Light Lighthouse museum.
This presentation will be a great introduction to the show at Twin Lights which runs through November 22nd.

NO CLASSIC & WOODEN BOAT FESTIVAL in 2019
 NMHA regrets to announce that there will be no Classic and Wooden Boat Festival this year due to an over abundance of other events in September and October.
The upside is that you can visit Twin Lights Lighthouse in Highlands, NJ, and view "GUNS BLAZING! The War of 1812 and the New Jersey Shore".
SEPTEMBER 15: FAMILIES, ADULTS, YOUTHS PADDLE DAY
For families, adults and youth. Canoeing from 10:00am - 2:00pm. It's FREE and no registration is required. Just turn up and paddle!
 All are welcome to paddle in colorful River Rangers℠ canoes. Life vests, canoes and paddles provided. Come in clothes that can get wet and bring water to drink.

MARCH 20: PUBLIC PRESENTATION "New York Harbor Pilotage" by Captain Chris Begley
 Have you ever wondered how ships enter and leave NY/NJ ports and New York harbor?
Captain Chris Begley holds a USCG Master's License of Unlimited Tonnage Upon Oceans and is a federally Licensed Pilot for NY and NJ.
He will explain pilotage and what it takes to navigate very large ships into nation's third largest seaport.

FEBRUARY 27: PUBLIC PRESENTATION "A Marine Artist's Inspiration" by Nicholas Berger
 We are fortunate to have renowned marine painter Nick Berger at out first public presentation of 2019. His paintings are in many private collections, including that of a former US President.
His work is exhibited in high-end galleries in New York, Connecticut, and in Beacon Fine Arts in Red Bank, NJ. More information HERE

NOVEMBER 7: PUBLIC PRESENTATION: Simon Lake-New Jersey's Submarine Inventor
 In 1893 the US Navy sponsored the Great Submarine Contest which pitted New Jersey's Simon Lake against John Holland and others.
Lake, an Atlantic Highlands resident, conducted his submarine experiments in the Shrewsbury and Navesink Rivers.

OCTOBER 17: PUBLIC PRESENTATION. The Pound Boats and Beach Fisheries of the Jersey Shore.
 The noted local maritime historian, Ned LLoyd, will present a historical review of the commercial fishing methods and the pound boats that fished off the beaches of New Jersey for 150 years.

Sign up children age 10-14 for a week of paddling fun on the Navesink and Swimming Rivers and Shadow Lake. They will learn teamwork and canoeing skills, learn about (and likely see) our local birds of prey, and explore the critters that live on and under the water - all while having fun!

May 26th: BIRD WATCHING CRUISE on the NAVESINK
 The cruise is fully booked but the date change may open up some places for waitlisted people who will be contacted in the order that they entered the wail-list.
Join NMHA and Monmouth County Audubon Society for a morning bird watching cruise on board the Classic Boat Rides' Mariner.
Breakfast and a Monmouth County Audubon guide will make for a great early morning outing!
JUNE 2: RALLY for the RIVERS ECO-FEST
April 25: PUBLIC PRESENTATION "Pollution Source Trackdown on the Navesink River"
 The Navesink is a beautiful visual and recreational resource for Monmouth County, and when the NJ DEP downgraded 565 acres of shellfish growing waters in 2016 caused much public discussion.
Bill Heddendorf, from the NJDEP will describe the actions taken to track down the pollution sources and the results obtained.

APRIL 4: PUBLIC PRESENTATION: "The Ship Halve Maen in North American and World History"
 Eduard van Breen, an expert on the Dutch impact in North America and the World, will show how a Dutch ship, the Halve Maen (Half Moon), became a trading and cultural link between what was to become New Jersey and the then global world.

Due to Atlantic Basin disembarking changes (another ship is moored where we were to moor!) and low level of sign-ups, NMHA has reluctantly cancelled this June 10 trip. Full refunds for all participants. NMHA may run this or a similar event in the Fall.

FEBRUARY 22, 2017: PUBLIC PRESENTATION - Eastern Monmouth County Watershed.
 Ms. Alexis Bowman, NJ Watershed Ambassador, will talk about the key role the watershed plays in human/nature interaction.
She will explain the current approach and the some of the pressing issues. The County cannot do everything itself - it requires the communities in the watershed to participate in in its health.

OCTOBER 5, 2016: PUBLIC PRESENTATION - Destinations Past: Highland Beach.
 Travel back in time and learn about an iconic New Jersey beach resort that was located on Sandy Hook, and which hosted hundreds and thousands of guests from 1888-1962

C A N C E L L E D JULY & AUGUST: RIVER RANGERS℠
The first duty of NMHA and the River Rangers Committee is to the safety and well-being of the children, and recent reports from the NJ DEP on Navesink River pollution and press reports on the stinging jelly fish are the cause of the cancellation of the 2016 program. NMHA hopes that these problems will be dealt with before the 2017 season.

Rik van Hemmen will present an updated version of the chronology of boating on the Navesink from earliest times till now.
His pictures will illuminate this story, and he has a new initiative to introduce - the concept of the Navesink National Marine Sanctuary.

AUGUST 22, 2015: Dory Rowing on the Navesink
Dories are one of the oldest workboats designs and are powered by four or six oars and usually steered by a Cox.

JANUARY 14, 2015: Public Presentation
The Quaker Migration to Monmouth County: Why, When and How.
 All sorts of people started to settle in Monmouth Counter after the April 8, 1665 signing of the Monmouth Patent by Gov. Nicolls of New York. This did "Give, confirm, and grant" the area we know as Monmouth County to twelve individuals with the requirement that they had to persuade "100 families at the least" to settle in the County.
This presentation will describe the Quaker migration on the 350th anniversary: why they were interested in coming, and how they got there. More information HERE.

NOVEMBER 5th - Public Presentation: A Voyage of Rediscovery: The Onrust in 2014
 In June 2014 NMHA commemorated the 350th anniversary of the first voyage of English settlers from Gravesend to Monmouth County by organizing the reenactment of that voyage by a replica of an early 17th Century sailing ship - the Onrust.
NMHA will also celebrate 2014 for the founding of the first permanent home of NMHA at the historic Grover House, built circa 1730 by James Grover, grandson of one of the original twelve English settlers.

October 1: It's 1664 and New Jersey Needs YOU!
 Public Presentation: In the Fall of 1664, just months after acquiring New Netherlands from the Dutch, the English Governor Richard Nicolls started an advertising campaign to attract settlers to New Jersey.
The proclamation “Conditions for New-planters in the Territories of his royal Highness, the Duke of York” laid out who could buy land and under what conditions.

AUGUST 24: CANOEING at CHRIS' RIVER PLAZA MARINA
For families, adults and youth, this is your opportunity to experience what RIVER RANGERS experience!
 Canoeing from 10:00 AM - 2:00 PM. All are welcome to paddle the Swimming River in colorful River Rangers canoes. NMHA will supply canoes, life vests and paddles for all. YOU bring hat, sunscreen, bug spray, and water. Children must be accompanied by an adult.
AUGUST 3: Fluke Fishing Fund Raiser!
 Enjoy a half day out on the Mariner fishing for fluke and help support Sea Scout Ship Navesink at the same time!

JUNE 5-9: Visit of the Sailing Ship Onrust
 To commemorate the 350th anniversary of the arrival for the first settlers in Monmouth County, the the ONRUST, a replica of 17th Century ship and typical of the ships that brought the first settlers to our area in 1664, will cruise to Highlands and into the Navesink.
PUBLIC ACCESS DAYS: Families! School students! Experience living history by visiting the ship. It's FREE!

May 17-18: Community Boatbuilding
 Wooden canoes to add to the River Rangers fleet were built in two days behind Fair Haven Fire House. The building teams were ready and eager to start.
River Rangers, Sea Scouts from two local ships, and others from the community helped refurbish and repaint existing canoes.
Come for a few hours or a whole day!
APRIL 23: Public Presentation: "The New Clearwater Garvey"
 For over thirty years NJ Friends of Clearwater's the Adam Hyler has been the mainstay of the summer Environmental Sail Program jointly run with NMHA on the Navesink.
Tom Gibson, a long-time member of NJ Friends and NMHA and an Adam Hyler skipper, will describe the Environmental Sail Program, the Adam Hyler, and the design and build process for the new garvey. More information
MARCH 22: Public Presentation: "Iceboating on the Navesink and the Hudson"
 NMHA, Monmouth Boat Club (MBC), and Norh Shrewsbury Ice Boat and Yacht Club (NSIBYC) will combine to present an historic day of iceboating history to the current day.
Prominent iceboaters will present their experiences at MBC in the morning and NSIBYC will offer tours of their facility and incredible memorabilia in the afternoon. More information.
On March 1st, the North Shrewsbury Ice Boat and Yacht Club took its rebuilt ice yacht ROCKET onto the thick ice on the Hudson near Albany to join the Hudson River Ice yacht Club's ice yacht JACK FROST and many other historic wooden ice boats. Read a report here.

New Jersey Friends of Clearwater and NMHA have sailed the Adam Hyler Oyster Garvey every year since the early eighties.
The 2012 sailing season was uneventful and the 2013 season has not happened, and it has been decided that a NEW BOAT must be built as the existing hull is leaking and really difficult to fix. Discussions over designs will commence and you can visit this space for announcements.
