Shad is not presently landed at Belford due to the fact that it requires specific fishing techniques and equipment that are not presently employed by the Belford fleet. Nevertheless shad is a very important fish in the raritan Bay and its tributaries. Shad was together with the salmon the most significant food fish for the raritan bay tributaries. Pollution and overfishing severely depleted the raritan bay salmon and shad fisheries, but management efforts have allowed the reopening of shad fisheries in the raritan bay and its tributaries.
