The sustainable schooner Apollonia will kick off Climate Week by loading Jersey Shore Coffee Roasters coffee at Bahrs Landing in Highlands, New Jersey, on Sunday, September 22 for transportation and delivery to Kingston, New York.
Apollonia, a commercial sailing vessel, has been moving cargo between the upper reaches of the Hudson River and the greater New York Harbor since 2020. This will be the vessel's first cargo stop in Monmouth County, sponsored by Attentive Energy, Apollonia's sponsor for New Jersey port calls, with the support of Navesink Maritime Heritage Association.
Cargo movement by water between Monmouth County and points along the coast and up and down the Hudson was the primary form of cargo transport since European settlers first arrived in the area in 1664.
This form of transport disappeared with the advent of trucks and trains in the 1900s, with the last gasp of marine cargo transport from Monmouth County likely being illegal rumrunning in the 1920s.
While waterborne passenger service revived in the 1980s, no revival of waterborne cargo movement to and from Monmouth County has occurred until now. Marine transport of cargo, especially by sailing vessels, has a much lower carbon footprint and is an attractive option for cargoes where there is no press of time, particularly given climate change threats to coastal communities.
Apollonia has established regular cargo trade between almost 20 load and discharge ports in the greater Hudson Estuary. The addition of Monmouth County through this initially small shipment opens a whole new swath of opportunities.
Besides benefits to the environment, small waterborne cargo movement also revives waterfronts and provides the public with access to educational opportunities in lucrative maritime careers.
