Presentation: Apollonia, Sustainable Re-establishment of Maritime Cargo along the Hudson River and New York Harbor. A presentation by Sam Merrett and Brad Vogel.

Apollonia is a 64 feet schooner with a 20,000lb cargo capacity operated by dedicated maritime experimentalists in an effort to shift cargoes from fossil fuel driven vessels and vehicles to sustainable energy driven vessels.

The Apollonia with its crew has been delivering cargo under sail for several years at 20 ports along the Hudson River and New York Harbor. The project has been a remarkable success and is providing deep insight into community building and sustainable transportation.

Sam Merrett, Apollonia Captain, and Brad Vogel, Apollonia supercargo, will be speaking about the many interesting aspects of this project, which is a microcosm of large scale maritime cargo operations with all its complexities of navigation, certification, shore terminal development, upland transportation, cargo securing and cargo stowage all while focusing on zero emissions.

The Apollonia project may one day be considered to be as historically significant as the 1807 Fulton’s Clermont, or the 1614 Onrust, and NMHA is thrilled to offer its Members and Friends an introduction to this very interesting project.
