PUBLIC PRESENTATION: "Strange Things in the Salvage Sun"

Rik van Hemmen will tell strange tales and show pictures of the New Carissa, the dusky plover, invasive dune grass, Vice President Gore, napalm, the loggers and the logging pilots. This is not a technical tale, it is a tale of dark and delightful insights into the minds of people who cannot stay away from watery challenges.

Rik van Hemmen has been involved in salvage since he was a little boy. While he has worked on salvage projects all over the world, his favorite salvage of all time was the New Carissa.

7:30pm: Coffee and Cookies.   8:00pm: PRESENTATION      9:00pm: Q & A and close.

There are strange things done in the salvage sun

      By the men who salvage bold;

The ocean waves have their secret tales

      That would make your blood run cold;

These modern pirates have seen queer sights,

      But the queerest they ever did see

Was that night on the New Carissa in Coos Bay, Oregon

      When the napalm, the 4 inch gun, and the torpedo got the project done.

With apologies to Robert Service, poet
