Zara Anishanslin, The Painter’s Fire: A Forgotten History of the Artists Who Championed the American Revolution: Thursday September 10, 7:00 p.m. doors at 6:30 p.m.

The Navesink Maritime Heritage Association will present historian and author Zara Anishanslin on Thursday, September 10, at 7 p.m. at the Monmouth Boat Club, 31 Union Street, Red Bank.

The war that we now call the American Revolution was not only fought in the colonies by soldiers with muskets and bayonets. On both sides of the Atlantic, artists also played an integral role in forging revolutionary ideals. Discover the inspiring stories and intertwined lives of three of these largely forgotten Patriot artists: award-winning British painter Robert Edge Pine, American wax sculptor and spy Patience Wright, and America’s first identifiable enslaved portrait painter (and former mariner) Prince Demah. They defied the British monarchy, armed with paint, canvas, wax, and espionage while risking their lives and reputations to support the cause of liberty.

Anishanslin is Professor of History and Art History at the University of Delaware and director of its Museum Studies and Public Engagement Program. Her latest book, published by Harvard University Press, has been featured in Smithsonian Magazine, USA Today, and The Wall Street Journal.

The program is free and open to the public. Doors open at 6:30pm for light refreshments. Reservations should be made in advance at www.navesinkmaritime.org. Copies of The Painter's Fire can be purchased in advance at River Road Books, 759 River Road, Fair Haven.

NMHA COMMUNITY PADDLE THE NAVESINK DAY

All are welcome to this free event! Paddle in colorful RIVER RANGERS canoes!

Paddle the Navesink from Maple Cove, Red Bank.

Canoes, life vests, and paddles provided. Open to the Monmouth County community, to ALL families, adults, youth, and kids (under 15 must come with an adult).

Come any time between

10:00am and 2:00pm

and come in clothes that might get wet!

A donation of $5.00 per adult to cover insurance will be welcome. (children age 10 and under are free).

Maple Cove is at the north end of Maple Avenue, Red Bank, just behind the headquarters building of OceanFirst Bank and down the slope to the river. There is free parking there.
